It is essential that your mini has an earth strap from the engine to the car body.

This cable can be found fitted from the gearbox to the subframe on mini's before 1996, it was then moved to the upper engine stabilizer arm with the introduction of the mpi.  

If you have a twin point you may wish to add an extra cable as the hole in the front subframe is still there, bolt it to the first lower bolt on the gearbox at the timing cover end of the car.
