The locating rings were originally made for 12G295 heads with twin carbs, the purpose being to line up the inlet maniold to the inlet ports on the cylinder head.

They have now been added on most twin carb factory produced cars.

There is a recess in the inlet port on the head and usually the inlet manifold to take these spacers.
